Move-Out Week on Fowler Avenue

End of semester is the heaviest textbook stretch of the Tampa year, and also the most wasteful one. Apartments along Fowler Avenue empty in about four days, and books get abandoned in stairwells because nobody made a plan for them on the way out.

How Do I Pack Textbooks Without Wrecking My Back?

Small cartons, half-filled. Textbooks are the densest thing in any house, and overloading is the classic way a generous impulse turns into a bad afternoon and a torn rotator cuff.

• Half-fill a medium carton instead of loading a large one to the top.
• Two strips of tape across the bottom seam. A textbook carton fails at the seam or not at all.
• Bag the books, then box them. Tampa humidity swells paper, and a swollen textbook is a lost one.
• Raise the carton off the bare slab and carry it out on the morning of your service day.
• Under a roof only. From June to September that 3 PM storm is a scheduled event, not a possibility.
