How Do I Prepare Books for Donation in Miami?

1. Do not sort. Hardcovers, paperbacks, children's books, DVDs, CDs and puzzles can all ride together in one box.

Line the box with a plastic bag, or bag the books in groups and load the bags into the box. Either way there is a layer of plastic between the paper and the world.

How Heavy Should a Donation Box Be?

Light enough to carry from your door to the curb without setting it down, which in practice means around thirty pounds.

Books are heavier than they look. A copier-paper box or a banker's box full of hardcovers is about as much as any person should lift. A large moving box packed with the same books is a trip to the emergency room.

If a box feels too heavy, split it into two smaller ones. Sturdy bags work too, so long as they are well packed and will not give out when lifted from the bottom.
