What Is a Community Book-Sharing Program in Miami?

How Do I Give Books to the Miami Network?

Pick a service day, pack your books into boxes or sturdy bags, and set them out in a covered spot on the morning of the pickup. The donor packs and the Local Pick-Up Partner does not bring boxes.

Not the night before, though. The wet-season storms between May and October arrive on their own schedule and take no interest in yours. Pickups run 8 AM to 8 PM and you do not need to be home. That is the entirety of your obligation.

How Do Miami Organizations Request Books?

Organizations submit a request through the Give ME Books program describing what they need and roughly how much. What we can tell you honestly is that the requests are real and partners fill them where they can. What we will not do is promise a specific box of specific titles on a specific date. Miami shelves are bilingual and multigenerational, which is exactly what local classrooms cannot buy fast enough. A single house can produce Spanish novels a grandmother carried through a move, English chapter books a teenager outgrew, and a stack of Haitian Creole readers.

That mix is precisely what programs across Miami-Dade County Public Schools struggle to source. The books already exist. They are two miles away, in a closet, behind a stack of towels.

What Moves Through the Network

Books and physical media of nearly every kind move through the Give ME Books program in Miami, in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole alike. Requesting organizations tell partners what they are short on, and partners fill what they can from what neighbors set out.
