The board books always go first. Chewed corners, bent flaps, a bear with a thumbprint of applesauce on his face, and they are still the single most requested thing in the entire network.

Why Do Children's Books Move Faster Than Anything Else?

A picture book gets read four hundred times by one child and is still perfectly good for the next one. Meanwhile a family in Westchester outgrows an entire reading level in about eight months.

The mismatch between how fast kids move and how slowly books wear out is the whole reason this category never sits still. Somebody is always aging out, and somebody else is always aging in.

The Bilingual Part Is Not a Footnote

In Miami-Dade, bilingual demand is the demand. Spanish-English picture books, Haitian Creole readers, and dual-language early chapter books are the titles that classrooms and tutoring programs ask for and rarely have enough of.

Title I classrooms across Miami-Dade County Public Schools stretch their book budgets hard, and a box of gently read bilingual picture books does more good than the person packing it usually realizes. So if there is a shelf in your Kendall house with a mix of Spanish and English titles on it, that shelf is gold. Do not separate them. Same box.

What Children's Books Does Give My Books Network Pick Up in Miami?

Nearly all of them, including the ones a library branch cannot shelve. Ordinary wear is expected and is not a reason to leave a book behind.

Packing With Kids in the House

Use smaller cartons than you think you need, because board books are dense and a big box of them gets heavy fast. The donor packs, and your Local Pick-Up Partner arrives to load what is already boxed rather than bringing boxes along.

• Bag the books inside the box. Carports and garages hold humidity, and humidity always finds paper.
• Set the boxes out the morning of your service day, never the night before. The May-to-October afternoon storm is reliable in a way very little else is.
• Keep the box up off the bare concrete.
• Covered spot only: carport, screened porch, under the eave.

Let the kid put one book in the box themselves. It changes how the whole thing feels.

Where Children's Books Go After a Miami Pickup

Local Pick-Up Partners sort offsite, then redistribute many items to readers, schools, libraries, nonprofits, and organizations that request books through the Give ME Books program. Children's titles are among the most-requested things those organizations ask for.

Some items are resold by the partner, which is what keeps the pickup free for you. Items that cannot be reused may eventually be recycled as a last resort. We do not promise that a specific book lands in a specific classroom, because nobody honest could. We do say plainly that the request side of this network is real and busy. Booking a Miami Pickup

Enter your ZIP code on the Give My Books Network site. If a Local Pick-Up Partner serves it, choose a service day on the spot; if not, your request goes to the out-of-area pickup system, where a nearby partner may claim it.

Pickups run 8 AM to 8 PM and you do not need to be home. Pack the board books, set them under the carport in the morning, and let some other four-year-old wear them out all over again.
