Doorstep pickup means exactly what it says. The books leave from your front porch, your covered patio, your carport — wherever's easiest for you. No loading the car. No driving across town in 50th Street traffic.

People in the Heart of Lubbock and over by Maxey Park tell us this is the part they appreciate most. The whole thing fits around their schedule, not the other way around. Pack the boxes whenever you have time, schedule the pickup online when you're ready, and set everything out the morning of service day. That's it.

Where to Leave the Books on Pickup Day

A front porch is the standard answer. A covered carport works just as well. A garage with the side door propped open is another good option, especially when the wind is up — and out here, the wind is almost always up.

Newer homes in Southwest Lubbock often have deeper covered entries that keep boxes shielded from blowing dust. Older homes in Tech Terrace and Bayer Heights have smaller porches but plenty of carport options. Pick whichever spot is safe, dry, and easy for your Local Pick-Up Partner to reach.

One Lubbock specific. The South Plains wind is its own kind of operational hazard. A half-empty box can sail off a porch on the wrong afternoon. Most books and media qualify. Hardcovers and paperbacks. Children's books, picture books, board books, early readers, chapter books, young adult. Cookbooks. Coffee table books. Religious texts, history, romance, science fiction. We also collect DVDs, CDs, audiobooks on disc, board games, puzzles, and video games. Pack everything together. There's no need to separate by genre or condition.

You don't need to sort anything before pickup. We genuinely mean that. Local Pick-Up Partners handle all the sorting offsite after collection. Pack containers at a weight you can lift, and let the partner take care of the rest.

What we need to skip is anything moldy, water-damaged, or physically falling apart. If a box has been sitting somewhere damp and everything inside smells off, those items probably can't find a second life.

What Happens After the Pickup

Once your Local Pick-Up Partner collects the boxes, everything goes back to their workspace for sorting. Many items are redistributed to readers, schools, libraries, nonprofits, and organizations that request books through the Give ME Books program. Some may be resold by the partner to help sustain the free pickup service. Items that cannot be reused may eventually be recycled, but only as a last resort.
