Why Estate Pickups Are Different

When a parent passes or a family is downsizing, the books are rarely the first thing on the list — but they need a respectful path forward. The collection is larger. The books carry meaning, even if the family doesn't have room to keep them. There is usually a deadline — a closing date, a probate timeline, an out-of-state buyer waiting on possession.

That's the situation we're built for. Give My Books Network handles full libraries from estates across Independence — a long-time home in the Truman Road corridor, a parents' place near the Truman Library, a downsized condo in Independence Square.

How to Prepare an Estate's Books

Pack everything in boxes or sturdy bags ahead of pickup day. The donor packs — the partner does not bring boxes — so plan to have moving boxes, banker's boxes, or doubled grocery bags on hand and the books packed before service day.

You do not need to sort or organize anything. With estates, families are usually managing a hundred other things. Sorting through every shelf is not on the list.

One thing to flag specifically: family keepsakes. Set them aside before the pickup. Once boxes leave the property, they leave.

Where Estate Books Go After a Independence Pickup

Many items are redistributed through the Give ME Books program to schools, libraries, nonprofits, and organizations across the Kansas City metro. Title I schools, ESL classrooms, after-school tutoring programs, senior centers, and rural Little Free Libraries pull from the same pool. Some items may be resold to help sustain the free pickup service. Items that cannot be reused may eventually be recycled as a last resort.
