How Do I Estimate My Volume in Boxes?

Count shelves, not books. A rough number tells your Local Pick-Up Partner what kind of day they are walking into, and that is the whole purpose of the estimate.

• One standard copy-paper box holds roughly 30 to 40 average books.
• A three-foot shelf of hardcovers is about one box. Sometimes a box and a half.
• A full bookcase, five or six shelves, usually lands between five and eight boxes.
• A wall of built-ins in an old greystone is anybody's guess. Count shelves and multiply.

If you land on 'somewhere between twenty and thirty,' that is a perfectly good answer. Say that when you schedule. Nobody is checking your math.

Stairs, Walk-Ups, and Third Floors in Chicago
