Do I Need to Be Home for a Doorstep Book Pickup?

No. Give My Books Network collects from the doorstep, so the pickup happens whether you are there or not. Set your boxes out starting at 8 AM in a safe, dry location, and a Local Pick-Up Partner collects them by 8 PM.

You can be at work. You can be at the dentist. You can be standing on an L platform in a coat that is not warm enough. The pickup still happens.

If you would rather be there, that is fine too, and plenty of people are. It has simply never been a requirement, and pretending otherwise would only cost you an afternoon.

How Do I Schedule a Doorstep Book Donation Pick Up in Chicago?

Enter your ZIP code and pick a service day. If a Local Pick-Up Partner serves your ZIP, you can book immediately. If nobody serves it yet, the request enters the out-of-area pickup system, where nearby partners may claim it.

There is no charge either way, and no obligation. Coverage across Chicago is uneven by nature, because partners add ZIP codes as they grow, and a block with nobody last spring may have somebody now.

Where Do the Boxes Go in a Chicago Two-Flat or Bungalow?

Put the boxes wherever they stay dry and stay visible from the street or the alley. Chicago housing is not one thing, so the answer is not one thing either.

• Brick bungalow: the covered back porch is the workhorse spot. The garage side door off the alley is the runner-up, especially if the porch faces the wind.
• Two-flat or three-flat: the shared vestibule, or the top of the front stoop under the overhang. Tell your neighbors what the boxes are so nobody wonders.
• Wood-frame cottage: the enclosed front porch, if you have one. Otherwise the back landing.
• Courtyard building: just inside your entry door, rather than out in the courtyard.
• High-rise: the package room or the front desk, arranged with the building first.

A word about the gangway. It is tempting, since it is right there and out of sight. It is also narrow, often dark, and not somewhere a partner can reasonably go looking for boxes. Give My Books Network works within whatever access rules a building sets, so pick a spot that is obvious and agreed on.

Chicago Weather Is the Real Variable

Cardboard is the weak point in a Chicago winter, so a covered spot beats an open one every single time. Over in Portage Park and Edgewater alike, the failure mode is always the same: cardboard, snow, gravity.

A box left uncovered during lake-effect snow soaks through from the bottom, and by the time anybody notices, the books have taken the damage. If the forecast is ugly and covered is not an option, put the books inside a sturdy bag before they go in the box, then tape the lid down. That single move saves more books here than anything else on this page.

Summer has its own version. Humid August plus a porch that catches the afternoon sun will curl paperback covers within a day. Do not set boxes out a week early. Set them out the morning of.

What Goes in the Boxes

Books, mostly, plus CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, VHS tapes, vinyl records, audiobooks on disc, board games, puzzles, and video games. Hardcover, paperback, children's books, textbooks, cookbooks, reference. No need to separate any of it.

Here is the rule people forget: you pack the books. The Local Pick-Up Partner does not bring boxes. Boxes or sturdy bags, well packed and not too heavy. If it feels like a bad idea to carry, it is a bad idea to carry, so split it into two.

Sorting is not your job. Partners sort everything offsite after collection, which is why an evening spent separating hardcovers from paperbacks is an evening you will not get back.

After the Boxes Leave Your Chicago Stoop

Sorting happens offsite, not on your sidewalk. Once a Local Pick-Up Partner has your boxes, many items are redistributed to readers, schools, libraries, nonprofits, and organizations that request books through the Give ME Books program. Some are resold by the partner, which is how a free pickup stays free.
