A January sale is built in the fall, which is why organizers want your books in September. They need weeks to receive, sort, price and shelve, and a box arriving the week of the sale usually cannot be worked in at all.

Turn up in September with four good boxes and you are the most popular person in the building. Turn up the Friday before with the same four boxes and you have handed somebody a problem.
