A great many sales will quietly halve a price, or fill a bag for a flat fee, when a teacher explains what the books are for. Nobody will offer it unprompted. You have to say it out loud.

Older editions of a math or grammar text are almost always fine. The content moved very little between editions. The price moved a great deal.

Reference sets are the sleeper buy. A used encyclopedia set or a solid dictionary costs almost nothing now and lasts the entire schooling run.

Bilingual Households and the Two-Language Shelf

Spanish-language books are expensive new and abundant used in Miami-Dade, which is a rare and welcome inversion for a bilingual household.

In a lot of Miami houses the shelf holds two languages because the household speaks two. Grandparents reading in Spanish, kids reading in English, everybody in the middle switching mid-sentence without thinking about it.

Secondhand sales here carry Spanish-language titles in real volume, because Miami families donate them in real volume. Look at neighborhood and parish sales before you look anywhere else.

The Reader Who Finishes Four Books a Month

At four books a month, buying new is a car payment and buying used is a coffee habit. The arithmetic is not subtle.

The trick is to stop shopping for a specific title and start shopping for a specific shelf. Go to the sale, browse the fiction table, and let it hand you something.

That is a different way to read, and most people who switch to it never switch back.

Where Do Miami's Affordable Copies Come From?
