# Handling a Large Book Collection in Baltimore

**Quick answer:** Give My Books Network collects large book collections free from Baltimore doorsteps, with no per-box charge and no upper limit. Pack the boxes yourself, set them out by 8 AM on your service day, and a Local Pick-Up Partner collects between 8 AM and 8 PM. Twenty boxes is a normal pickup.

## How Do You Handle a Large Book Collection in Baltimore?

Schedule a free pickup, pack the boxes, and set them out by 8 AM. Give My Books Network sends a Local Pick-Up Partner to collect any quantity from a Baltimore doorstep at no cost, and there is no per-box charge however many there are.

Large is not a problem here. Large is Tuesday. A Roland Park front room lined floor to ceiling, a Guilford study holding forty years of hardcovers, a whole basement in a rowhouse where three generations kept adding to the pile.

The only real work is the packing, and that part is yours. You do not need to be home when the partner arrives.

## How Many Boxes Is Too Many?

There is no cap. Give My Books Network partners collect two boxes and they collect forty, and neither number changes what a Baltimore donor pays, which is nothing.

If a collection is genuinely enormous, say so when you schedule. A partner who knows a forty-box collection is waiting brings the right vehicle and the right amount of time. A partner who thinks it is three boxes brings neither, and then everybody has a longer day than they needed.

## What About a Professor's Library?

Academic libraries are welcome, and they are among the most useful collections a Local Pick-Up Partner ever sees. Give My Books Network accepts scholarly monographs, journals, reference sets, and textbooks in any quantity, free, from any Baltimore address.

Baltimore produces a lot of these. A retiring Johns Hopkins faculty member, a Morgan State office that has to be emptied by the end of the month, a Guilford rowhouse where the dining room quietly became a reading room. Those books have a real afterlife: departments, tutoring programs, literacy programs, and buyers who have been hunting one specific volume for years.

Do not talk yourself out of donating them because they seem too specialized. Specialized is exactly what somebody is searching for.

## Handling an Estate Collection in Baltimore

Estate collections are the reason free doorstep pickup exists. Give My Books Network collects a full library from a Baltimore rowhouse at no cost, on your schedule, without anyone having to load a car eleven times.

Nobody sorting a parent's house has spare weekends, and street parking on most Baltimore blocks makes a drop-off run a genuine ordeal. One-way streets, no driveway, a door opening straight onto the sidewalk. Loading a car at the curb is a project. Setting boxes on the marble steps is not.

## What Libraries Can and Cannot Absorb

Public library branches accept limited donations and often cannot take textbooks, older editions, encyclopedias, or anything in serious quantity. Shelf space is finite, and a branch has a building to run rather than a receiving dock.

None of that is a criticism, and the [American Library Association's Book Donation Programs guide](https://libguides.ala.org/book-donations) lays out the reasoning clearly. It is simply why a large collection needs a different destination, and why free pickup exists to catch the overflow.

## How to Pack a Whole Basement of Books

Work in small boxes and short trips. A whole basement of books is not a heroic single afternoon; it is a few evenings of steady packing, and the trick is keeping every container light enough for one person to carry up the stairs.

- Use small boxes. Liquor-store boxes, copy-paper boxes, banker's boxes.
- Half-fill anything holding hardcovers. Books weigh more than they look like they weigh.
- Do not sort. Everything rides together, and the partner sorts offsite.
- Set aside anything mildewed or swollen. Those cannot be passed forward.
- Stage the boxes on the first floor as you go, not all on the last night.

The partner does not carry boxes up from a basement or down from a third floor. That part is on you, which is exactly why small boxes matter.

## What Happens to a Large Baltimore Collection After Pickup

Local Pick-Up Partners sort large collections offsite, box by box. Books with a market are resold, which funds the free pickup, and much of the rest is redistributed through the Give ME Books program to schools, libraries, literacy programs, and nonprofits that request books.

Items with nothing left may eventually be recycled as a last resort. There is no tax receipt: partners are family businesses, not 501(c)(3) nonprofits, and that is stated up front rather than buried.
